Wendy's Story

Wendy has worked in the care sector for nearly 30 years. Having left school at 16 not knowing which career path to follow, she signed up for a local college course in practical caring skills. This offered four days a week doing work experience in a care home. Wendy loved it – and has never looked back.

She joined our organisation in 2010 as a care assistant and steadily worked her way up to deputy manager. Wendy is highly trained, with a wealth of knowledge and experience of all types of care, including more specialist dementia support, under her belt.

Making sure that resident’s needs are met at all times forms a large part of Wendy’s day-to-day role as deputy manager. She also supports residents and their families during the all-important transition from their own house or a hospital into the home, so that the process is as smooth as it can be. Part of this is around gaining enough knowledge about each resident so that the home can deliver the best possible person-centred care. Wendy also supports staff within their roles, developing their knowledge and skills.

She says: “To be able to really unlock individuals, discovering their history, their likes, their dislikes, provides us with the knowledge to care for them so much more. If the resident is acting scared or anxious, it may just be because they are in a noisy environment. Whatever they are going through it’s real to them and, as carers, we need to be on their journey with them.”

Away from work Wendy has two sons and a daughter aged a 21, 18 and 12. Her advice for young people just starting out on a career? “When I first started care it was just a job. But now, there is a career path for care assistants, and you can grow within the care sector – I’m proof of that! You can make a difference to people’s lives, and with all the training and the support of a team, it is a great sector to be a part of. If even one bit of you wants to try it, give it a go!”
