Senior Care Assistant/Medicine Technician
Senior Care Assistants/Medicine Technicians (SCA/Med Techs) provide the highest possible standard of care and service to residents while performing a supervisory role. While on duty, they oversee other care workers and take responsibility for the smooth running of the service. SCA/Med Techs administer prescribed drugs in accordance with NMC guidelines and company policy and procedure. They respond to emergencies and provide guidance and support to care assistants, under the supervision of qualified nursing staff.
Paulette came to Canford Healthcare after spending two years as a domiciliary carer for a young child with health problems. Two years ago she was promoted to senior carer/med tech after two years.
As a care assistant, Paulette was involved with residents’ personal care, bathing, meals, activities and overall safety and wellbeing. Now Paulette specifically looks after the medication for 13 residents and she also focuses more on new admissions and GP rounds. There’s more paperwork and, generally, more responsibility.
“I love the challenge of the SCA/Med Tech role,” she says. “But I miss my old floor and like to go back to see colleagues and the residents from time to time.”
Paulette came to the UK from Jamaica 25 years ago. She travels back every year to visit family, especially her son whose plays professional football there. A dedicated churchgoer, Paulette loves singing, and will tackle anything from choir and gospel music to Whitney Houston and Christmas carols (which she sings for residents). “I’m known as the singing bird of Heathlands!” she says.
